Research Studies
Benefits of Cannabis Use.
There are many research studies on the benefits of cannabis use. Though the plant has been utilized for medicinal purposes for millennium by different cultures around the world, the legalization of cannabis has led scientists to take a closer look at its properties and to test whether word-of-mouth evidence can be scientifically verified.
Scientific Data
Cannabis as a Remedy.
There is now substantial scientific data showing that cannabis is a reliable remedy for a number of conditions, including chronic pain, nausea, spasticity, and epilepsy. There is also growing evidence that cannabis is effective for insomnia, fibromyalgia, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and arthritis.
Treatment Options
What kind of cannabis medication or wellness treatment to use can best be addressed by your Heeyl consultant, but for further research, we recommend the following studies below.
ALZHEIMER’S
Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with Alzheimer’s, symptoms first appear in their mid-60s. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that more than 5.5 million Americans, most of them age 65 or older, may have dementia caused by Alzheimer’s. (National Institute on Aging)
ANXIETY
Occasional anxiety is an expected part of life. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time. The symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school work, and relationships. There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and various phobia-related disorders. (National Institute of Mental Health)
ARTHRITIS
Arthritis means inflammation or swelling of one or more joints. It describes more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, tissues around the joint, and other connective tissues. Specific symptoms vary depending on the type of arthritis, but usually include joint pain and stiffness. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
CHRONIC PAIN
Chronic pain is pain that is ongoing and usually lasts longer than six months. This type of pain can continue even after the injury or illness that caused it has healed or gone away. Pain signals remain active in the nervous system for weeks, months or years. Some people suffer chronic pain even when there is no past injury or apparent body damage. (Cleveland Clinic)
DEPRESSION
Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home. (American Psychiatric Association)
EPILEPSY
Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Anyone can develop epilepsy. Epilepsy affects both males and females of all races, ethnic backgrounds and ages. (Mayo Clinic)
FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes pain all over the body (also referred to as widespread pain), sleep problems, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress. People with fibromyalgia may be more sensitive to pain than people without fibromyalgia. This is called abnormal pain perception processing. Fibromyalgia affects about 4 million US adults, about 2% of the adult population. The cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but it can be effectively treated and managed. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
INSOMNIA
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. With insomnia, you may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep. This happens even though you have the time and the right environment to sleep well. Insomnia interferes with your daily activities, and may make you feel unrested or sleepy during the day. (National Institutes of Health)
NAUSEA
Nausea and vomiting are not diseases, but rather are symptoms of many different conditions, such as infection (“stomach flu”), food poisoning, motion sickness, overeating, blocked intestine, illness, concussion or brain injury, appendicitis and migraines. Nausea and vomiting can sometimes be symptoms of more serious diseases such as heart attacks, kidney or liver disorders, central nervous system disorders, brain tumors, and some forms of cancer. (Cleveland Clinic)
SPASTICITY
Spasticity is generally caused by damage or disruption to the area of the brain and spinal cord that are responsible for controlling muscle and stretch reflexes. These disruptions can be due to an imbalance in the inhibitory and excitatory signals sent to the muscles, causing them to lock in place. Spasticity can be harmful to growing children as it can affect muscles and joints. People with brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis can have varying degrees of spasticity. (American Association of Neurological Surgeons)
POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)
Traumatic events—such as an accident, assault, military combat or natural disaster—can have lasting effects on a person’s mental health. While many people will have short term responses to life-threatening events, some will develop longer term symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD affects 3.6% of the U.S. adult population—about 9 million individuals. Women are significantly more likely to experience PTSD than men. (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
